Funky Thistle was established in 2005 out a love for textiles. Since that time I have created hundreds of one of a kind messenger bags, totes and purses that have been sold to people across Canada and around the world. Every piece is individually designed. I do not use bolts of fabric but instead pull each design together from hundreds of small sample swatches. The art is in taking from all these colours, patterns and textures and making something new each time.
Why do I use these swatches?
As stated I love textiles and also love this beautiful planet. The sample fabrics I use are collected from the interior design industry when they are longer in need. These fabrics are high quality but too small for most uses. It has been my mission since the beginning to rescue these gorgeous fabrics and create items that allow them to be appreciated for years to come. Besides, where would the fun be for me or for you if I were just taking bolts of fabric and making the same bag over and over! Not one of Funky Thistle pieces has ever been replicated, it could not be done.
You can feel great about purchasing slow crafted, Canadian made pieces designed with an earth friendly philosophy. And you will never bump into someone with the same bag!
A little more info if you like:
-All Funky Thistle pieces are made using both new and repurposed materials. -The bags are fully lined with great care and attention to detail. -All feature well placed pockets. -The appliqués are carefully hand cut from leather and sewn on.
I aim to create little pieces of wearable art & craft that are also practical and comfortable.
I have designed all the pieces myself. A love of art and craft led me to pursue her BFA in Fine Arts at NASCAD University in historic Halifax, NS. After graduation I moved to the Rocky Mountains of Canada where I have been inspired by their natural beauty ever since.
